Watches have been evolving over the years. We used to only have analog watches before the digital models came along. Now, we have smartwatches that can do more than tell time. The question is: are they the right option for you?

Pros for Smartwatches

1. They are convenient for having certain smart features. Since smartwatches are basically smaller smartphones, they come with a lot of functions that don't require you to bring out your phone. They can display notifications and access apps. Some models are even capable of contactless payment.

2. Smartwatches are easier to personalize. Since they come with their own screens, you have the option to choose any display you want as your wallpaper, making the watch fit any colorway you may have in your outfit. You could even put up a photo of your loved ones if you want.

3. There are safety features that might come in handy. A lot of the later models already come with safety features that can save your life in the event of an incident. For instance, the Apple Watch has an SOS feature that sends your location to emergency responders.

4. They can be connected to your smartphone. Smartwatches can usually be linked with your personal smartphone, and it is usually done so smoothly if the smartwatch and phone are of the same brand. Through the watch, you can answer calls or use it to control the music you're playing through your phone.

5. Smartwatches can be used as fitness trackers. You can always opt for actual fitness trackers, but you'll find that a smartwatch will provide you with more benefits in the long run. It can track your steps, the calories you burn, your sleep patterns, and the distances you walk. You can monitor many aspects of your health with just a few taps.

Cons for Smartwatches

1. Smartwatches aren't cheap. With all the advantages listed above, you can already expect that they lighten your wallet. They can go from $230 to $400, depending on the brand and the model. You can go for the cheaper brands, but you won't be getting the unique features that popular brands can offer like Samsung and Apple.

2. They break easily. Since they are simply small screens, they are very fragile and could cost you a lot to have them fixed. Where it's placed also plays a huge factor in how likely it can be broken. We move our hands and arms a lot, so the watch might bump into hard surfaces, which would cause cracks and other damage.

3. It has a comparatively short battery life. Compared to the usual watches, which usually work for over a year before they run out, smartwatches can only last between one day to a week, and that's already stretching it. If you multiple apps at the same time, you can expect the battery to only last for a day tops.

4. Software updates mean a shorter lifespan. Just like smartphones, smartwatches can get outdated after a couple of years, unlike traditional wristwatches that only require you to change their batteries and they will still work as intended.

5. The screen is too small for other functions. If you have small fingers, then this might not be an issue for you, but having thick digits doesn't exactly bode well for the user. Since the screen is small, the buttons would be even smaller, and even skipping a song could be difficult.
