Nintendo SNES Classic Edition: New Retro Console Coming In 2017 But There's A Hitch

The Nintendo SNES Classic Edition is coming this September. Fans of Nintendo who missed out on the NES Classic Edition will be delighted to know that they get another chance to get a retro console before the year ends. Unfortunately, it looks like the SNES Classic Edition will be a "limited edition" in more ways than one.

Nintendo recently announced that the SNES Classic Edition will be available starting September 29 and will be available until 2017 ends. Nintendo, however, has yet to divulge what its plans are after the year ends. The company did say that it will ship more SNES Classic Edition units than it did with the NES Classic. Simply put, it looks like Nintendo has no plans yet of producing and selling the SNES Classic Edition beyond 2017.

The NES Classic Mini was a huge success despite the lock of stock and other issues. Engadget listed down some of the things that Nintendo should do with the SNES Classic to prevent the issues with the NES Classic. For one, the SNES Classic Mini could use longer cables. The NES Classic had notoriously short controller cables which prevented players from playing comfortably as they had to hunch forward and stay close to the screen.

The NES Classic Edition only had 30 games and hackers took it upon themselves to add more. It would've been wise for Nintendo to include more than 30 games but the SNES Classic Edition will come with only 21 games. Fortunately, one of those games is the previously unreleased 'Star Fox 2" so fans have something to look forward to. Kotaku has a list of the full line-up of games in the SNES Classic Edition. Some of the other titles include "Contra III: The Alien Wars," "Donkey Kong Country," "Final Fantasy III," "Kirby Super Star," "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past," "Mega Man X," "Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting," "Super Castlevania IV," "Super Mario Kart," "Super Mario World," "Super Metroid," and "Super Punch-Out!!"

Another is to add a menu button. Engadget pointed out that the short controller cables ensure that the player iss always near the mini console and could easily reach the reset button to access the system menu. It would be a lot better though if Nintendo adds a menu button on the controller.
