Super Mario Movie Is Delayed, Gets a New Name and Release Date

Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and the rest of the gang seem not quite ready to be on the big screen.

Illumination Studios Paris, the subsidiary of Illumination for animation, has allegedly updated their official website to update the name and release date of the upcoming "Super Mario Bros." movie, delaying the movie further.

Illumination has yet to address its subsidiary's update to its listing as of the writing of this article.

'Super Mario Bros.' New Name And Release Date Details

Go Nintendo, the publication that first reported the update, mentioned in its article that "Super Mario Bros." might not be the film's final title and that its release might be delayed further.

According to the publication, Illumination Studios Paris, Illumination's subsidiary responsible for animation, updated the movie's listing on its official website.

Before the update, the movie was titled simply "Super Mario Bros," and its release date showed it would be showing in theaters on Holiday 2022.

You may be aware of a rumor that recently circulated on Twitter, courtesy of @DespicableOutof, that Illumination has chosen to title the movie "Super Mario Bros" instead of coming up with a more Illumination-original title, per Nintendo Life.

However, Illumination Studios Paris' update changed the movie's title to say "Super Mario Bros. Animated Film" while also changing the outdated "Holiday 2022" release date to "Holiday 2023."

These changes might mean that the movie's first title was only a working title rather than a finalized one and that we might have to wait until the end of 2023 before we can finally see the Mushroom Kingdom on the big screen.

A separate Nintendo Life article mentioned that the movie's poster above the movie's details makes the page even more confusing as it still displays the already outdated "Holiday 2022" release date.

Nevertheless, Nintendo Life and Go Nintendo hope that its new release date of Holiday 2023 is only a mistake.

Holding Out On Hope

A quick visit to the Illumination Studios Paris' official website showed that the studio did indeed change the movie's title to "Super Mario Bros. Animated Film," and that it also retained the now-outdated movie poster with its "Holiday 2022" release date.

However, the release date shown on the website suggests that the studio might have changed the movie's release date back to Spring 2023, or it did not change at all.

Illumination Studios Paris' official website states that the "Super Mario Bros. Animated Film" could hit theaters in Spring 2023, as was previously announced.

Whether or not this is true is unclear, as Illumination has yet to address the changes its subsidiary made to the movie's listing.

'Super Mario Bros. Animated Film' Details

The "Super Mario Bros. Animated Film" movie is the fruit born of the collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination, the animation studio responsible for the "Despicable Me" and "Minions" film series.

The movie will be co-produced by Illuminations' founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and Super Mario Bros. creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

Meanwhile, Chris Pratt is confirmed to play Mario, while Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Day will play Princess Peach and Luigi, respectively.

On the other hand, Jack Black will be in the movie as Bowser, while Seth Rogen will play Donkey Kong.

Fred Armisen will also be in the movie as Cranky Kong, Donkey Kong's grandfather.
