Nintendo Owes Highest Q1 Profit Ever to Zelda, Mario Movie

Nintendo reported its highest first-quarter profit ever due to the massive sales of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The concurrent releases of its popular video game and video-game based movie resulted to a large sales and profits for the company. Thus, the company announced that they are making a "a steady progress" towards their full-year earning forecast.

Nintendo Switch Games Booms in 2023 

Nintendo's new game title The Legend of Zelda: Tears of Kingdom has reportedly sold 18.51 million units during the first quarter. The game was known to break records by selling over 15.70 million units in a span of 8 weeks after its release last May.

Moreover, sales for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and other Mario game titles have provided a big chunk of revenue to the company. The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw a 1.67 million units sold for quarter one. 

In addition, software unit sales for Switch rose by 26.1 percent year-on-year to 52.21 million units. Meanwhile, Nintendo recorded its highest annual playing users during July 2022 to June 2023, with over 116 million users. 

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Bumps Nintendo's Sales 

The Super Mario Bros. Movie which was released last April has reportedly been viewed by 168.20 million people worldwide, as of July 30. Additionally, its box-office revenue has already totaled to $1.35 billion, making it the highest sales for an original film based on a video game. 

Due to royalties and income from the visual content of the movie, overall sales of Nintendo in mobile and IP related business grew by 190. percent year-on-year. 

The company acknowledged the power of expanding outside the video game platform business to create more opportunities for the business to grow.
