Epic Games Developer Account Gets Terminated After Publicly Criticizing Apple's DMA Proposal

Epic Games announced that Apple revoked its approval for its Sweden AB developer account, citing that the cancelation was due to the company's public criticism over the tech giant's Digital Markets Act proposal.

Last month, Epic Games shared its plans to bring Epic Games Store and "Fortnite" to iOS users within the European Union (EU), in line with the DMA.

Apple Halts Epic Games' Plans for EU Users

In a recent announcement, Epic Games explained that Apple had terminated the already approved developer account a day before the DMA became official. This move canceled the plans of the gaming company to develop the Epic Games Store and open "Fortnite" for iOS.

"They are undermining our ability to be a viable competitor and they are showing other developers what happens when you try to compete with Apple or are critical of their unfair practices," Epic Games wrote.

The company also asked for justification for terminating the account, where Apple stated that it was due to publicly criticizing their proposed DMA compliance plan. More specifically, the tech giant cited an X post from CEO Tim Sweeney.

Apple Considers Epic as a Threat

Apple also argued that Epic's plan is a threat to their ecosystem. However, Epic retaliated that they have been collaborating since 2010 for Unreal Engine.

For instance, some Arcade games were built using Epic's Unreal Engine, and there is also an ongoing shipment of Experimental Support for the Vision Pro.

Meanwhile, Apple shared with MacRumors that Epic has breached its contractual obligations and that the company only exercised its rights by terminating the contract.

"Apple has the right to terminate 'any or all of Epic Games' wholly owned subsidiaries, affiliates, and/or other entities under Epic Games' control at any time and at Apple's sole discretion," the company explained.

As for Epic, the company stated that it will continue to fight to bring fair competition and choices to iOS devices in Europe.
