Samsung’s S Pen Gives Off a Weird Smell, Users Say

Smartphone users don't usually go around smelling their phones or the accessories that come with them, so if a couple of users say that an accessory smells sort of stinks, you start to wonder how strong that odor might be.

The S Pen's Unusual Scent

One of the things that makes some of Samsung's S Series phones unique is the stylus that comes with them. Some users prefer the models, especially if they have great use for them, whether it's for art-related activities or for taking notes traditionally

A Reddit user pointed out that the S Pen on their Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra "absolutely reeks," which started a discussion within the social network. This prompted others to smell their stylus as well as find that the user was right about it.

A moderator on one of Samsung's forums explained that it's not something that users should be worried about and that there was a simple explanation for the issue. The reason behind the smell could just be due to the phone's heat.

Like all electronics, excessive use could lead to the device's temperature rising. When the S Pen is in its holster and is close to the internal components of the phone, the plastic could also heat up, as reported by The Verge.

This could be what causes the smell, which is described as similar to when a phone is left in the car under the sun for a few hours. That weird smell could just be the odor that comes from burning plastic.

It could go away after the phone has cooled down, but that doesn't really fix the problem. The stylus will still smell like burning plastic every time the phone does intensive work and its components start heating up, along with the S Pen.

How to Prevent Your Phone from Overheating

If you're also experiencing the weird smell that comes off from the stylus, you try to avoid having your phone increase in heat due to activity. There are a couple of ways you can make that happen, although it might affect the capacity of your usage.

For one, avoid overusing your phone when you're in a hot environment, especially since your phone's temperature will already be high before you even use it. You should also make sure that the vents are not blocked by your phone's case or your hand during use.

Close the apps you are not using to lighten the load on your phone's components. The device working overtime is what causes it to heat up. If you can, you should also lower the screen brightness when you're indoors as it contributes to the temperature increase as well.

If you cannot avoid intensive activities, you should at least take breaks. Demanding tasks for your device include gaming, streaming, and even using editing apps. If your phone heats up quickly, it might be due to the kind of case you are using. Use good quality cases that consider ventilation as a factor.
