Apple is reportedly planning to use the M2 Ultra chip to create the first AI servers that would bring AI capabilities to iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
The M2 Ultra chip was first used on the Mac Pro and Mac Studio lineup from last year.
Apple to Start With M2 Ultra for Complex AI Operations
Bloomberg reported that Apple has been planning to use its own chips and process AI tasks for three years already. The sudden surge and popularity of AI has pushed the company's timeline in a quicker phase than planned.
M2 Ultra, which powers Apple's most powerful Mac computers, will be the first chip to be used on cloud-computing services. Previously, reports stated that Apple would be making new custom chips to support its AI initiative.
The company is now looking to the power of its existing processors, citing that they have enough security and privacy components to support their AI queries. Apple is now trying to catch up with other tech giants after falling behind.
Apple Preps on Bringing AI to iPhone, iPad, Mac
Apple is planning to process simple AI-powered features straight on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, said people who are familiar with the matter. The company has been gradually introducing AI features to its latest devices.
Most of the early AI tools are expected to be easily handled by the existing chips on Apple devices. On the other hand, complicated AI tools like generating content, images, and videos, will require a cloud-based approach.
The company will be relying on its data centers to process cloud features. There is also a chance that outside facilities will be used by Apple, similar to the approach on iCloud and other services.
Apple just released the M4-powered iPad Pro and dubbed its neural engine as a "powerful chip for AI." CEO Tim Cook also hinted at the capabilities of their semiconductors and how they could potentially drive an edge for the company.
