Alexa is getting a revamp from Amazon, but it will not use the e-commerce company's own artificial intelligence (AI). Instead, the company will be relying on Anthropic's Claude AI to power the voice assistant.
The latest report from Reuters has claimed that this is because Amazon's AI developments have failed, and the company has opted for the third-party partnership option for Alexa.
In order for users to enjoy the revamped Alexa, they still need to get a subscription service in order to access the enhancements made. The subscription is reportedly priced at $5 per month.
Alexa Revamp to Use Anthropic's Claude AI, Not Amazon's
The Alexa revamp planned by Amazon for later this year is not going as intended for the company, and now it is turning to startup Anthropic to power its premium experience with Claude AI. Reports have claimed that Amazon's AI did not meet the company's standards for what it envisions for Alexa, and it is something that Claude AI fulfilled for the company.
It was revealed in Reuters' report that Amazon's AI struggled to deliver the content asked of it, and it takes around six to seven seconds to answer a user prompt.
It was previously reported that that Anthropic has made new developments for Claude, including what is known as Artifacts. This feature is meant to expand one's search in new windows.
Alexa's Gen AI Integration: Subscription at $5 Per Month
Alexa's upcoming generative AI integration is reportedly arriving this October, and it will be available under a Premium subscription for users that will set them back $5 to $10 per month.
However, it should be noted that Amazon will still offer a free version of Alexa for users, offering the same voice assistant features found in its smart speakers, displays, and more.
Amazon Plans for Alexa's Gen AI Revamp
The dawn of generative AI has since trumped the capabilities and features of the crafty AI-based voice assistants in devices like Apple's Siri, Google Assistant, Samsung Bixby, and Amazon Alexa. These different companies have already integrated generative AI into their systems, with Siri's Apple Intelligence, Gemini AI, and Bixby's Galaxy AI, but Amazon has seemingly been left behind.
With this, the e-commerce tech giant has since shifted its focus from Alexa to generative AI developments, which the voice assistant will also benefit from. Amazon's large language model (LLM) developments, in fact, seems promising with its different offers, including its e-commerce platform's shopping assistant and AWS cloud services.
Alexa is part of this planned shift towards generative AI, but recent reports claim that Amazon's developments have failed to deliver the needed technology for it.
