Google to launch Motorola Nexus 6 ‘Shamu’ smartphone this month

Google's much-rumored Nexus 6 smartphone made in collaboration with Motorola will make its official debut this month, according to a new report.

Codenamed "Shamu," the Motorola Nexus 6 smartphone has leaked on several occasions so far, and the rumor mill is going into overdrive in anticipation of the big launch, widely expected to occur this month.

A new report from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) now bolsters claims of an October launch for the Nexus 6, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

"Google this month expects to release its largest smartphone, intensifying competition in the fast-growing market for super-sized mobile devices known as phablets, according to three people familiar with the situation," the WSJ reports.

"The new phone - code-named Shamu after a killer whale - will have a 5.9-inch screen, a high-resolution display and be sold under the Nexus brand, two of the people said. Motorola Mobility, the phone maker that Google is selling to China's Lenovo Group Ltd., is manufacturing the phone, the people added. A Google spokesperson declined to comment."

The next-generation Nexus flagship smartphone has leaked extensively so far, making is way online in various leaks, reports, benchmarks, and what-not. At the same time, Google has yet to confirm anything in regards to the Nexus 6, so it all remains in the rumor state at this point.

Unveiling the Nexus 6 in October would allow Google to have the smartphone on sale before the lucrative holiday shopping season, and the handset is expected to be in high demand. Nexus devices have always been successful due to their good specifications, affordable price tag, and the much-touted Nexus experience, which guarantees fast updates to the latest version of Android as soon as it comes out.

An October launch would also fall in line with Google's previous launch schedules. The Nexus 5, for instance, launched on Halloween last year, i.e. Oct. 31, when the company simply put the device on Google Play and announced it on Google+, without any fanfare.

As the WSJ further points out, the Nexus 6 will be larger than both of its biggest rivals, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus and the 5.7-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and competition is expected to be fierce. The publication offers no exact launch date for the Nexus 6, so we're still left with a vague timeframe. With October rapidly unfolding, however, it won't be too long until the Nexus 6 makes its official debut.

We'll keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available, but take all leaks, rumors, and reports with a grain of salt in the meantime.
