The iPhone's Sapphire Camera Lens Is Not Scratch Resistant After All

The use of Sapphire lenses has been the norm for Apple as it uses this material for the production of its iPhone's screens. Despite the seemingly great feature that it has, it turns out that it is not really that great due to its scratch resistance issues.

A viral video caught the spotlight as it tests the iPhone's camera lens in terms of its level of tolerance on scratches.

Apple Sapphire Is Not Really Pure Sapphire

According to JerryRigEverything, a YouTuber who posted the video test about the sapphire issue, it is highly possible that Apple is using a more affordable and cost efficient sapphire laminate that is put on top of regular glass in creating its iPhone lenses, as it is not that resistant to scratches.

The test that JerryRigEverything carried out is undertaken with the help of an XRF machine and an electron microscope. The tests reveal that Apple doesn't use pure grade sapphire on its iPhone lenses.

The Revelation Of The True Nature of the iPhone's Sapphire Material

The lower portion of the lens contains a much lesser sapphire material when compared to the outer portions of the lens. The tests also reveal that the iPhone lens will easily get scratched as it only ranks level 6 on Mohs Scale of Hardness. On the other hand, a Tissot watch ranks a level 6 on the scale.

However, Apple seems to still be in safe waters as the Apple Watch Stainless Steel edition is not yet tested out. But questions arise as to whether the Apple Watch also has this issue.

JerryRigEverything says, "How impure can your sapphire be, and still call it sapphire?" He also concludes that the iPhones are no doubted scratch resistant, but the tricky part is that it is not very scratch resistant.
