‘American Gigolo’ Reboot In The Works; TV Adaptation Of The 1980s Iconic Film Picked Up By Showtime

"American Gigolo," one of the most successful crime drama films of 1980s, is being adapted as a TV drama series. The classic film that starred Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton has been picked up by Showtime for a reboot. Other than the people behind-the-scenes, further details have yet to be revealed including the new stars that will take the place of Gere and Hutton.

Latest reports confirmed that the "American Gigolo" reboot has already been planned and its development has already been underway since 2014. However, it is only now that a TV channel has picked up the project. The TV adaptation comes from Paramount TV and the original film's producer, Jerry Bruckheimer. Neil LaBute is also reportedly signed to pen the script for the reboot.

Bruckheimer is coming back to serve as an executive producer of the "American Gigolo" reboot through his Jerry Bruckheimer TV banner. He is said to work alongside Jonathan Littman. Other people who are confirmed to board the production team are Kristie Anne Reed (co-executive producer), James Oh (producer), and Paul Schrader (executive consultant).

The "American Gigolo" reboot is said to take a more modern Los Angeles set up, but will still take the theme of the original Paramount film. The classic film featured a gigolo (Gere) who unintentionally fell in love with a politician's wife (Hutton). The film, which was the first to feature frontal nudity of a male star and received acclaim for its stellar acting, gained its reputation as one of the most iconic films of its time. Also, it is said to be the turning-point of the careers for the lead stars Gere and Hutton who was only a model then.

"American Gigolo" is the latest TV adaptation project of Paramount. It has recently been mining its library for other reboots including "The Italian Job" (NBC), "School of Rock" (Nickelodeon), and "Shutter Island" (HBO). The upcoming series is currently being produced alongside another Paramount property, "Jack Ryan" (Amazon), which is also currently in the works.

The stars who will lead the "American Gigolo" series are still being decided as well as the pilot date for the show. However, Showtime promised to reveal more concrete details before the year 2016 ends.
