A few weeks ago we reported that Samsung would be using an Intel processor in its upcoming Galaxy Tab 3 10.1. At the time, the rumors suggested that an Intel Atom processor would power the tablet and now a new report claims that the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 will not only definitely use an Intel processor, but this time it's the Clover Trail+ that will be inside.
When news first broke that an Intel processor would power a Samsung Android tablet, it was a little hard to believe since Samsung has been making its own processor for years to be used in its devices and some of its rivals. Intel has been struggling to make its way into smartphones and tablets running Android. The fact that Samsung has chosen Intel to power the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is a major win for the chipmaker.
According to Reuters, Samsung has chosen Intel to power the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 and will use its Clover Trail+ mobile chip to power at least one version of the popular tablet. This isn't the first time Samsung and Intel will partner on mobile devices. The two companies jointly formed Tizen OS, the mobile operating system Samsung is rumored to be using to lessen its dependence on Google's Android operating system. Intel also powers many of Samsung's desktop, laptop, and tablet computers that run Microsoft's Windows operating system.
This move is a major win for Intel as it was slow in recognizing that smartphones and tablets are the future of mobile computing. The company has been trying to get its chips in smartphones and tablets but has not seen the kind of success it has seen in desktop and laptops. It' s unclear why Samsung chose Intel as the processor supplier for its tablet since it has only previously used its own Exynos processor to power its popular Android smartphones and tablets up until now.
Intel has been hard at work in tweaking its powerful chips to be more efficient and use less energy as it apparently realizes that the future is tablets and smartphones and no longer the more traditional desktop and laptop processors it has been the market leader for years.
Samsung is holding an event on June 20 in London where it is expected to unveil new Galaxy smartphones, ATIV Windows 8 laptops and tablets, and possibly the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 Sources told Reuters it's unclear if Samsung will announce the Intel powered Galaxy Tab 3 at the event. For now we'll have to wait until June 20, but at least it's pretty much confirmed that Intel will definitely be inside.
