Motorola's new Moto X ad campaign confirms that users will be able to design the smartphone, but it wasn't clear on what that would entail. At least one of those customizations will come in the form of choosing different color back plates for the smartphone.
The Moto X will be the first smartphone that both Motorola and Google have worked on since the company's acquisition. The Moto X will be Motorola's latest flagship smartphone and will go head to head with the Galaxy S4, HTC One and iPhone 5S.
Motorola has decided to take a new approach in trying to differentiate the Moto X from its rivals. One way the company plans on achieving this is by letting users customize the smartphone. The company hasn't offered any details on what type of customizations it will offer consumers, but a new leak reveals at least one of those will be the device's back plate/battery cover.
Nowhereelse.fr has posted images of what it claims will be the some of the color cases users will be able to choose from when designing the smartphone. Users will also reportedly have the option of having Motorola engrave the cases as well. The images show bright colored back shells in teal, red, and purple. The site also posted an image of a bright green case as well. The cases look and appear to function like Samsung's battery covers found on the Galaxy S4 and will have similar clips that will snap into place. This is not an unfamiliar move for Motorola, as it offered cell phones years ago that had removable cases that allowed users to change the colors and design by swapping out its cover. It's not clear what else the company will allow users to change apart from these back shells.
The latest rumors claim the smartphone will feature a 4.3 to 4.7-inch 720p display, run stock Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, will be powered by a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon Pro processor, expected to include 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM, a 10-megapixel rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front facing camera. There has been no word on how large its battery will be, but these leaked back plates appear to confirm it will be removable. We should be getting more solid information in the next couple of weeks as the company is planning a late summer release for the Moto X.
