SOAR Telescope Discovers An Asteroid Rotating On The Same Orbit As Earth: 2 Ways To Watch Asteroids
An asteroid measuring less than a kilometer wide is following our planet Earth in its orbit around the sun. It is also reported that this is the second time such an object has been discovered.
The trailing asteroid, referred to as 2020 XL5, was discovered for the first time in December 2020 by Pan-STARRS telescopes on the summit of Haleakala on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
In determining the location of the asteroid in 2020, the 4.1-meter Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope in Chile was used and became a crucial instrument.
According to scientists at the University of Alicante in Spain, they have "determined that 2020 XL5 will be stranded in an orbit around one of the sun-Earth "Lagrange points" for at least the next few thousand years."
In addition, SOAR observations revealed that 2020 XL5 appears to be a carbon-rich asteroid, which was previously unknown (called C-type).

A long-running Mars mission has collected data that has led scientists to believe that liquid water may have flowed on the planet as recently as 2 billion years ago, which is significantly later than previously believed.
