Meta Introduces Shorcuts on Messenger: How to Send a Silent Message and More

Meta has officially introduced a set of shortcuts that Messenger users can use when sending messages on the app.

Some of these shortcuts include one that will notify everyone in a group chat of your message as well as another that will not notify the participants that you have sent one.

Meta is bringing a new set of shortcuts that Messenger users will undoubtedly find useful when sending messages on group chats. Two shortcuts, in particular, are already available for both iOS and Android.

The first one is known as @everyone. According to the announcement by Meta, using this shortcut at the beginning of your message in a group chat will notify every member that you have, in fact, sent a message.

"@everyone is perfect for group reminders, impromptu get-togethers or when you need to gather the braintrust to crowdsource an answer to a time-sensitive question," Meta says in its announcement.

The other shortcut has the opposite effect. Per a report by The Verge, Adding /silent at the beginning of your message will not ping the whole group to notify them that you sent one. Meta says it is particularly useful when you want to send late night messages without worrying about waking anyone up.

Upcoming Shortcuts to be Added to Messenger

If you think that those are the only shortcuts Meta is adding to Messenger, think again.

However, you will have to wait for some time before the rest of the bunch is added to the messaging app. This is because these shortcuts are labeled as coming soon on the official announcement made by Meta.

One of the upcoming shortcuts, in particular, will only be available on iOS and Android users in the United States: the /Pay shortcut. What this shortcut does is make it more convenient for you to send and receive money on Messenger.

Take note, however, that this applies to one-on-one chats. It should likewise be noted that sending or requesting money using this shortcut is secure, according to Meta, and will incur no fees.

Three other upcoming shortcuts will be coming soon but only for iOS users. The first of which is the /gif shortcut, which allows users to easily find and send GIFs in a chat.

The last two are known as the /shrug and /tableflip shortcuts. These will be useful for those who still enjoy sending the popular text-based emoticons, the (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ (table flip) and ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (the shrug).

Meta's announcement also mentions that more shortcuts will be coming sometime later this year.
