Apple just released its latest firmware macOS update on beta to fix Studio Display's poor webcam quality.
When Apple first announced Studio Display, it was marketed to have an impressive webcam quality that would rival professional cameras. However, after getting their hands on the product, customers discovered that the images captured by the built-in camera were of poor quality, which disappointed numerous users.
A common complaint about the Apple Studio Display is that the webcam's image quality can be inconsistently poor at times. When the webcam issue was first reported, the tech giant promised that it would be addressed in a future update, which was finally released today.
Apple's rollout of the beta software is a promise to its users to fix these problems.
Studio Display: Poor Quality Webcam
Studio Display owners have particularly complained about the same problems they are experiencing with its webcam: The images are blurry, washed out, and filled with a lot of noise.
Almost immediately after the first Studio Display reviews, which were critical of the device's 12-megapixel webcam, were published on the web, Apple informed the press that it was working on a software update that would improve the quality of images captured by the device's built-in camera.
According to The Verge, Apple spokesperson, Jennie Orphanopoulos stated, "an update to the Studio Display firmware is now available with today's beta release of macOS Monterey 12.4. This beta update has refinements to the Studio Display camera tuning, including improved noise reduction, contrast, and framing."
Installing the Monterey 12.4 beta is currently only available to developers, with the rest of the public being able to do so later today through Apple's public beta program.
The Apple Studio Display currently retails for $1,599, an incredibly steep price for a monitor. This saddens a huge user base as they expect great quality given the price range and the brand and technology Apple carries.
Changes in the Apple Firmware Update
Apple releases its beta firmware to developers, nearly two months after the company's Studio Display was announced. The beta firmware includes improvements to the image processing of the company's built-in display webcam.
The update is currently only available to those who are running the most recent beta of macOS Monterey, and it is unclear when the update will be made available to the general public.
As reported by 9to5Mac, a user has reported that the beta allows the Apple Studio Display to have some adjustments on its Center Stage cropping which is now less aggressive.
Additionally, there is significantly less noise in the webcam images after the update, as well as a slight increase in contrast, but the image quality is still "quite washed out" when compared to other webcams.
