Samsung Galaxy S2 may not get Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

Some compatibility issues with the Samsung TouchWiz interface apparently stand in the way of an Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S2.

While Samsung is expected to push out the recently-released Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update for its Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 smartphones in the near term, the second-generation model - Galaxy S2 - will reportedly remain stuck on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, without even getting to taste the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update.

The latest information comes courtesy of German site Connect.de which reveals that the Galaxy S2 will skip the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update due to "adjustment problems in the TouchWiz interface." The publication also reveals that while Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update was originally set to make its way to the Galaxy S2 per the company's plans, the compatibility issue with the TouchWiz UI will keep the smartphone stuck on the current OS.

Samsung released the Galaxy S2 in 2011 and the smartphone came pre-loaded with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but since has received two major updates.

Earlier in March this year, SamMobile had received a pre-list of the devices that were slated to get the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update and the two-year-old Samsung Galaxy S2 had made it to the list. Moreover, the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note were rumored to stop at Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and not get any further updates.

However, the latest report would suggest that the Galaxy S2 users will have to make do with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. While Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean is not a groundbreaking update over the current platform, Galaxy S2 owners will undoubtedly be disappointed to learn that they will not benefit from any more updates in the future.

What's more, considering the original Galaxy Note phablet sports nearly the same hardware as the Galaxy S2, chances are that it too may be stuck on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

However, per a SamMobile report, the Galaxy S2 Plus is slated to get the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update.

"We can confirm that the newer Galaxy S II Plus will be getting Android 4.2.2, and while we currently don't have info on the normal S II, we'll be doing our best to find out what exactly Samsung's plans are," Sam Mobile reports.

With the Galaxy S2 allegedly set to remain stuck on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, fans will be hoping that other older Samsung devices do not suffer the same fate.
