Netflix is bringing Squid Game to life (mostly).
The streaming service recently announced that it is looking for English-speaking contestants to participate in the "biggest reality competition series" ever - a real-life recreation of the hit South Korean survival drama television series, "Squid Game."
Netflix has yet to disclose when the reality show will be ready to stream as of the publication of this article.
Squid Game: The Challenge Details
Netflix mentioned in its announcement that itsSquid game-inspired reality competition series, Squid Game: The Challenge, will involve 456 real players and a series of games inspired by the original TV show and new additions that would put its players' strategies, alliances, and character to the test.
Staying true to the original TV show, the reality game's participants will see others be eliminated en masse and in full view. However, unlike the original Squid Game, which executes players once they're eliminated, they will instead be sent home empty-handed. Even so, it isn't clear if Netflix will provide a consolation prize for eliminated participants.
Unfortunately, it isn't known if Netflix's version of Squid Game will let multiple contestants win the reality game's cash prize of $4.56 million, as the original TV show allowed multiple contestants to win the game, per Men's Health.
Brandon Riegg, Netflix's vice president of Unscripted and Documentary Series, mentioned that the original TV series' director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, supported the company's bid to turn the hit survival drama television series into reality.
He also added that fans of the original TV series worldwide could expect a "fascinating and unpredictable journey" as they witness the game's 456 real-world contestants navigate the reality game.
The reality game, which will be made up of ten episodes, is a co-production between Studio Lambert and The Garden, part of ITV Studios. It will also be filmed in the UK, with Stephen Lambert, Tim Harcourt, and Toni Ireland from Studio Lambert serving as the reality game's executive producers.
John Hay, Nicola Hill, and Nicola Brown from The Garden will also be the reality game's executive producers.
Netflix's Big Break
Engadget mentioned in its report that Netflix creating Squid game: the Challenge isnn't exactly shocking due to the original TV show being its most popular series of all time, with 1.65 billion view hours in the first 28 days after its September 2021 premiere.
The TV show also has numerous Golden Globe and SAG awards under its belt, which makes the creation of a reality game show spinoff a no-brainer for Netflix.
Squid game: The Challenge could also help Netflix attract potential subscribers to watch both the reality game show and the second season of the original Squid Game TV show.
How To Join Squid Game: the Challenge
Netflix mentioned any English-language speaker from any part of the world is welcome to participate in this round of the game.
