Google has partnered with HTC, Samsung and LG to build its Nexus smartphone in the past. A new report claims that Motorola will build the Nexus 5 with a planned Q4 release.
Google created the Nexus as a way for it to release hardware under its name. The devices would run Android the way Google intended, they were very developer-friendly, unlocked without any carrier modifications or approval and allowed the company and one of its licensees the privilege to build the device. It also tried to address the dreaded "Android fragmentation" that has been a sticking point for Google. The company believed the handsets were great reference devices for manufacturers since they were guaranteed to be upgradable in the future whenever Google released an update to Android and felt licensees would be able to deliver updates to its users in a shorter time.
Google chose HTC to build its first Nexus smartphone in January 2010, the Nexus One. The smartphone ran Android 2.2 Froyo and its design is still considered to be one of the best Android smartphones to be released. It followed up with the Nexus S, which was built buy Samsung and launched in December 2010 to coincide with the launch of Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
Google further chose Samsung to build the next smartphone, the Galaxy Nexus in 2011. The smartphone's launch also coincided with the release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Google decided to drop Samsung for its next Nexus smartphone and chose to go with LG to manufacture the current Nexus 4.
Taylor Wimberly has a proven track record with Motorola's plans and has provided many accurate leaks pertaining to the Moto X. Wimberly now posted a new message to his Google + page stating:
"Motorola will release a Nexus smartphone in Q4 (that is not the Moto X)."
The smartphone will most likely launch as the first device running Android 5.9 Key Lime Pie. Many people have been waiting for a Motorola Nexus and it sounds like the dream will become a reality in the next few months.
