The price of the Apple Music student plan was discreetly increased by Apple last month in a number of countries, including Australia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, New Zealand, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and South Africa.

But now, the tech giant is also increasing the pricing for the Apple Music student plan in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. after a month, according to the reports of Apple Insider and 9to5Mac.

New Apple Music Student Plan Price

Users are now being charged $5.99 for the Apple Music student plan in the U.S., as discovered by app developer Michael Burkhardt (via 9to5Mac). The same plan was formerly offered for $4.99 a month. The monthly cost in the U.K. has gone up from £4.99 to £5.99.

Given that an archived version of Apple's webpage still indicated the pricing as $4.99, the price change in the U.S., U.K., and Canada appears to have taken place on June 22 or June 23. Apple has not yet made the price change public.

Do Other Apple Music Plans Increase Prices As Well?

The cost of other Apple Music subscriptions stays the same. The pricing of an Apple Music Voice Plan is $4.99, the standard plan is still $9.99, and a Family plan is $14.99.

Apple Insider and 9to5Mac noted that the exact reason the student plan's price is rising while those of the other plans are staying the same is still unclear.

Music Streaming Platforms Such As Apple Music Lose Million Music Subscribers in the U.K.

A report found out that a substantial number of users have canceled their subscriptions to music streaming services, claiming the desire to save money, technical problems, a small selection of music, and too many advertisements.

In a separate Apple Insider report, citing a recent report study by Kantar Research, over one million U.K. subscribers have reportedly terminated their streaming subscriptions, including Apple Music, in Q1 2022. It also mentioned that fewer young people in the U.K. now subscribe to music streaming services.

At 37%, it also has the greatest number of users who say they wish to quit their subscriptions in order to save money, according to Kantar. In comparison, the research company reports that in the same time period in 2021, 33% of respondents who canceled their subscriptions cited the need to save money as their reason.

Meanwhile, younger consumers in the U.K. are experiencing the fastest decline in subscription rates. The proportion of people under 35 who have access to a music subscription has decreased from 57% to 53.5% annually.

According to the research, the proportion of new music customers across all services in the U.K. fell to below 1% of the population in Q1 2022.

It is worth noting that Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music are mentioned specifically in the research by Kantar, which analyzes all streaming services available in the U.K.
