A new record of concurrent viewership has been written in Twitch history.
With a peak of 3.3 million viewers, Spanish Twitch streamer Ibai Llanos Garatea, who goes "Ibai" on the platform, has set a new record for concurrent viewership, according to Eurogamer.
The record was set during a boxing event that he hosted over the weekend, which was known as Le Velada Del Año II. The event featured multiple content creators on the ring including YouTuber Spursito, streamer AriGameplays, singer David Bustamante, and seven other content creators.
The previous record for the highest concurrent viewership was set by TheGrefg at 2.5 million.
Ibai is Now the Fourth Most-followed Channel on Twitch
In a tweet, the platform celebrated the new record congratulating Ibai in setting a new Twitch record during the boxing and entertainment event.
Other content creators who competed in the ring were featured in Ibai's event, La Velada del Año II. There are some musical performances as well.
According to The Verge, boxing events led by content creator aren't exactly a new idea. However, "the success of Ibai's show, which took place in an arena in front of a packed crowd, demonstrates that they still can be big draws for live and virtual viewers."
The event brought over 400k new followers to Ibai, according to Eurogamer. According to Twitch analytics site Twitch Tracker, Ibai now has 11.1 million followers, which makes him the fourth most-followed channel on Twitch.
The platform's most followed creator is still Ninja, but Ibai currently occupied the spot above other Twitch mainstays like Tfue, xQc, Shroud, and Pokimane.
If you want to watch the full replay of the event, you can check it on Ibai's Twitch channel.
Who is Ibai Llanos?
Why is everyone talking about Ibai Llanos? Who is this person who set the new record for Twitch concurrent viewership?
Ibai is a Spanish internet celebrity, streamer and sports commentator. He is a Twitch and Youtube content creator. He has been a presenter for G2 Esports until 2021.
In 2021, during all the talks about Lionel Messi's future with Barcelona, the football star set a farewell dinner in Barcelona and Ibai was one of the invited.
During the time that French giants Paris Saint Germain secured the signing of Messi, every producer and reporters sought after Messi's first interview. However, to everyone's surprise, the first ever and exclusive interview with Messi went to Ibai.
During the interview, Ibai setup was different. Along with two of his oldest friends, Ander Cortés and Borja Nanclares, he had been ushered inside the players' tunnel.
The three had no sound equipment and were just filming on a phone. However, he has attained what other news outlets in the planet cannot secure - an audience of half a million people.
Even before that term streamer existed, Ibai has been a streamer already. When he was just 15, he would set up a YouTube channel together with some friends from Bilbao, Spain. They would film themselves playing the video game Call Of Duty.
At present, he already made a name for himself. Moreover, players do like to be interviewed by him instead of being interviewed by a reporter or journalist.
