GM's Hummer EV production is reportedly at a sluggish pace these days, even as roughly 80,000 customers anticipate getting their hands on the all-electric truck while on the waitlist.
As such, these folks on the long waitlist of the all-new GMC Hummer electric vehicle (EV) might have to be more patient before it arrives at their doorstep.
GM's Hummer EV Production at a Slow Pace?
According to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, the production of the all-new Hummer EV lags when compared to other automakers entering the electric market, such as Rivian and Ford.
The news outlet notes that it comes despite the newly renovated factory of General Motors (GM) in Detroit, which houses around 700 employees to work on the all-new Hummer.
The unnamed sources of The Wall Street Journal claim that the production of Hummer is at a very slow pace, averaging a dozen EVs a day.
It is worth noting that GM has been producing the all-electric Hummer for approximately six months.
The American automaker kicked off the production of the massive pickup EV last December 2021. In its first month, GM sold a single unit of the all-electric Hummer.
Hummer EV
A spokesperson of GM, Chad Lyson, said that the all-electric Hummer has an overwhelming waitlist of around 77,400, as per a news story by The Verge.
But with the current production output of the Hummer EV, they might have to wait for a little longer.
However, the GM spokesperson declined to confirm the veracity of these production numbers.
Interestingly, The Verge did the math for the potential customers of the Hummer EV. And they might have to wait for nearly two decades before they start getting their hands on an electric pickup truck.
If its production continues at this sluggish pace, the tech news outlet says it could take 17 years before it finishes its waitlist of 77,500 folks.
GM to 'Drastically Increase' Hummer EV Production
That said, the GM spokesperson said that the giant automaker is actually looking to "drastically increase" the production output of the Hummer.
But it might take a few more months before it ramps up. Lyson says the goal is in late 2022.
The Wall Street Journal reports that potential production ramp-up is all thanks to its new battery factory of GM in Ohio. It should provide the giant battery cells of the Hummer EV, and we might see more of the gigantic electric truck hitting the roads.
