Tesla plans to construct a huge additional facility at Gigafactory Texas. Even though it is the world's largest structure, the company sees potential to grow at the site.
Tesla Requested Permission to Build Another Enormous Building in Texas
The city of Austin has received a request from Tesla to allow the company to expand Gigafactory Texas with a massive new 500,000-square-foot structure.
At this point, Gigafactory Texas is enormous. The structure is already among the largest ever constructed.
CEO Elon Musk said earlier this year that the existing structure is comparable to around 15 city blocks or three Pentagons. More than 4 million square feet of area are provided, and 338 million cubic feet of volume are accommodated. Despite its size, Tesla still has plenty of potential to grow at the site since the existing construction is situated on a 3.3-square-mile-sized plot of land.
The company applied for a construction permit this week to develop on that site with yet another very large structure.
It's unclear whether that will be due to an increase in Model Y production currently at the plant or if Tesla plans to use the space to build new models due to arrive at the Texas Gigafactory next years, such as the Cybertruck and Tesla Semi.
Electrek recently claimed that insider knowledge places output at several thousand units for the first time in a week. Tesla hasn't provided much information regarding ramping up Model Y manufacturing at its Texas Gigafactory.
Although Tesla has claimed that its new 4680 battery cells and battery structure are a bottleneck, it is uncertain whether this is a sustainable situation. Additionally, there are hints that Tesla is now producing long-range Model Y cars with 2,170 cells to get past this bottleneck.
The Texas Gigafactory is one of the biggest factories in the world because Tesla wants to be vertically integrated down to the fabrication of batteries on-site. Tesla also intends to produce significant quantities at the factory.
The business is increasing output at the factory by 4,680 cells and even constructing a cathode processing unit on the same plot of land.
Tesla to soon deliver the Giga Texas-built Model Y Long Range
According to Drive Tesla Canada on June 23, Tesla may have two Model Y manufacturing lines running at its Gigafactory in Austin, one for the dual-motor Long Range version, which up until this point has also been the Model Y's basic model, and the other for a brand-new dual-motor Standard Range 279 mile variant.
Several of its users claim to have received notifications from the corporation indicating that the Model Y Long Range automobile they have ordered has been given a VIN with the letter A in the 11th position. The A denotes Austin. All vehicles delivered in North America up to this point have been put together in the Fremont facility in California.
Tesla wants to start new model deliveries nearby. The first Model 3 vehicles went to Fremont workers. The idea is that post-production concerns with a new model may be fixed at the facility. Others may think this is employing customers as guinea pigs for pre-production testing before handing over the keys. The service is free for Tesla.
Model Y Long Range employs the 2170 battery cells that have powered it from its conception, while the new Standard Range uses Tesla's new big format 4680 cells in a new structural battery pack. This belief is because Tesla hasn't answered press queries in over a year.
