Google has run into troubled waters as its newly-launched Nexus 7 is encountering GPS-related issues.
Several users have taken to various forums such as Reddit, XDA Developers and Google's own Product Forums to complain about the GPS issue with the new Nexus 7. Users are encountering issues with both securing and maintaining a GPS connection on the device, which makes navigation quite a hassle.
Apparently, the new Nexus 7 tablet loses GPS connectivity and fails to lock in again after working for a few minutes initially. However, for some users the Nexus 7 works perfectly for half an hour or so before losing connectivity.
"I was just wondering if anybody has been having this issue. After successfully locking onto satellites for GPS for navigation, if I turn off maps when I reach my destination, it requires a reboot until I can use GPS again, it only updates once every few minutes. Haven't done much testing on it since I was on a highway going 80 when I noticed," says a user on the XDA-Developers forum.
"Several users on XDA, Nexus 7 Google+ Communities, Android Central, etc... including myself, are having GPS problems with the N7 2013. It will get a satellite lock and work fine for anywhere between 10-30 minutes (longer for others) then it will go back into a "Searching" mode with the GPS icon blinking. Sometimes a reboot helps, others not," notes a user on Google's support forum.
Moreover, the temporary solution to reboot the device works only for some users. Other owners of the refreshed Nexus 7 have also tried to reset the slate to default factory settings and uninstalling updates. However, none of these fixes work in all cases and are not a permanent solution.
Google has acknowledged the issue and is looking into the problem. A Google product manager addressed the query on the company's support forum and said that they were "looking into it." However, it is not known when a fix will be pushed out users' way.
At this juncture it is not known what is causing the GPS issue. If it is not a hardware problem it should be resolved with a software update. Have you checked out the navigation function on your new Nexus 7? Are you encountering any issues with the GPS?
