Netflix is now testing a password-sharing option that charges users for additional homes in Latin American destinations.
The new add-on plan enables its users to share their passwords with folks outside their households, but they would have to pay extra to do so.
Netflix New Password Sharing Option
Netflix appears to be getting serious about its password-sharing crackdown efforts.
The giant streaming service introdcues a new option in Latin American destinations that legitimizes sharing passwords with other users outside of their homes.
While this has been a long-time behavior of its users, they were sharing their accounts with their friends without paying additional fees.
But this time, as per a news story by The Verge, Latin American nations, such as the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Argentina, and Guatemala, are now getting a new Netflix add-on plan.
The giant streaming platform is testing a new way to tackle password sharing among its millions of users.
The director of product innovation of Netflix, Chengyi Long, optimistically says that "it's great that our members love Netflix movies and TV shows so much they want to share them more broadly."
However, the Netflix director notes that "today's widespread account sharing between households undermines our long term ability to invest in and improve our service."
On top of that, according to a recent report by Mac Rumors, the streamer has around 222 million users who are sharing their accounts to roughly 100 million folks outside of their households.
Netflix to Charge Additional Homes in Latin America
And as such, a new add-on option was born. It specifically charges users when using their accounts outside of their homes for an extended time.
The Verge notes that users will have to pay extra when a Netflix account is used on a TV while in another location for more than two weeks.
To be more precise, Netflix charges roughly $1.17 in Argentina for an additional home. Meanwhile, other Latin American countries are required to pay around $2.99 to share their account with folks outside their household.
The support page of Netflix in Honduras says that the "Add an extra home" option starts on August 22.
Once it starts rolling, Netflix users will have to pay extra when using their accounts for several days outside their homes.
The support page says that when users go beyond the two weeks allowance, the streaming services will start blocking access to the TV until you pay the extra fee.
So if you are traveling and want to binge the latest season of Stranger Things, you only have two weeks to do so before you need to pay for more.
