Sony recently released its Xperia Z Ultra phablet in some countries and now reports are filtering in that users are encountering issues with the device's display.
The waterproof and dustproof Xperia Z Ultra touts a colossal 6.4-inch display, but now users are reportedly experiencing problems with the phablet's massive screen. Apparently, the problems begin occurring when one tries to unlock the phone and the display simply refuses to switch on.
Moreover, the backlight turns on but the display remains blank or, in some instances, shows green lines. Users are also reporting hearing the underlying operating system's sound as they tap the Xperia Z Ultra's screen, but the display still doesn't turn on. Some users also reveal that the screen suddenly wakes up if they repeatedly press the power button.
Users have taken to various forums and to YouTube to vent their frustration about issues with waking the display of the Xperia Z Ultra and in search of a solution.
One user on the XDA Developers forum thread apparently had to press the power button nearly 150 times before he could wake the display!
"I ordered an Xperia Z Ultra and received it in the mail yesterday. Unfortunately, the unit I received has a defective screen. When you press the power button, the screen backlight turns on but stays completely blank (black). Android is still running fine underneath -- pressing back/home/app softkeys gives haptic/audio feedback, pressing volume rocker gives volume up/down sounds, etc. However the screen stays completely blank and the device is unusable. No matter how many times you press the power button, the screen still remains blank/black. The screen will only turn on correctly, randomly. On my unit, anywhere between 5 and 150 power button presses. The screen also has a noticeable yellow tinge," complains the user on the forum.
Some Xperia Z Ultra users have let on that the firmware update to build 14.1.B.0.475 fixes the issues; however, other users complain that the update doesn't help at all. At this juncture, it is not known if the problems are arising because of a software glitch or are stemming from a hardware issue with some units.
Moreover, whether the problem is a widespread one or affecting just a small number some units is also not known. If it is a software issue, Sony will likely push out an update to fix the same.
