Netflix with ads might bring another drawback to its users, likely ditching the download feature.
It essentially prevents users from watching their favorite shows, movies, and documentaries while they are offline.
Netflix Ad-Supported Plan
Netflix's ad-supported tier is currently in the works, no less than the top brass of the giant streaming service has confirmed, as per a news story by The Verge.
But beyond the fact that the new plan of the video streaming service would obviously come with commercials, the tech giant has yet to reveal its features and drawbacks.
That said, the pricing for the new Netflix plan remains to be seen. However, the streaming service teased that the new tier would give its subscribers a more affordable choice.
Meanwhile, The Verge reports that the new ad-supported version of Netflix is seeing the light of day sometime in 2023.
So if you are looking forward to enjoying a cheaper option, you will have to wait until next year.
Netflix With Ads, But No Downloads Feature?
This time, though, the code of its app hints that the new tier would not only include annoying ads. In fact, the new ad-supported version is likely to remove the offline download feature as well.
According to the latest report by Bloomberg, a new revelation regarding the upcoming ad-supported tier gets the shimmer of the spotlight beneath the code of the iOS app of Netflix for iPhone users.
It exposed that Netflix plans to remove the download function for its shows and films in the upcoming low-priced plan.
The developer who discovered it, Steve Moser, says "downloads are available on all plans except Netflix with ads."
Can You Skip Ads on Netflix?
Besides the removal of the downloads feature, Moser went on to share his other hints from the Netflix app code.
Moser states that the code also suggests that users of the ad-supported plan would not get the handy skip button.
It is common for streaming services to include a skip button after the ad has played for a few seconds. But it appears that Netflix is going against the tide, according to the latest code.
On top of that, the developer also points out that the video streaming platform disables all playback controls while it is on a commercial break.
The streaming service declined to comment on the latest code sightings. So it is unclear if the tech giant is still working on a skip button.
Bloomberg notes in its news story that the new low-priced tier of Netflix is still a couple of months away from now. And as such, we might still see a bunch of changes before its debut in 2023.
