Elon Musk’s Simple Life Made His Mom Sleep in the Garage During Visits

Living simply has its perks and benefits, but for Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, doing so is just a means to an end.

The mother of the richest man in the world, Maye Musk, recently revealed to The Times that she sleeps in her son's garage when she visits him in Boca Chica, South Texas.

Boca Chica is the location of SpaceX's Texas headquarters and Starbase launch site, per Business Insider.

Maye Musk Living Arrangements While Visiting Elon Musk

Maye Musk revealed to the British publication The Times that whenever she visits her son, Elon Musk, she has to sleep in the garage, adding that Elon's home is so small that it does not have enough room for her to sleep in.

"You can't have a fancy house near a rocket site," Maye said jokingly.

The 74-year-old supermodel isn't wrong to think that way, though. Musk revealed in a recent The Full Send podcast that the house he is currently staying, which covers an area of about 800 to 900 square feet, costs around $45,000.

Elon said to podcast host Kyle Forgeard that the house initially had two bedrooms until he decided to convert the garage into one, making it a three-bedroom one.

"My friends come and stay and they can't believe I'm staying in thiis house," Elon said in the podcast.

Elon's statement is supported given to Vanity Fair by his on-and-off partner Grimes, who said that Elon lives below the poverty line at times to the point that she is asking if they could not live in a very insecure $40,000 house.

Maye would later find this out when she discovered that the mattress she was sleeping on had a hole in it. When she later told Elon about it, he simply suggested that she brings her mattress from her house the next time she visits.

In addition to this house, Musk has a $50,000 375-square-foot prefab tiny home that he uses for guests only.

Elon mentioned in a tweet in June 2021 that this house would see less use if he sold it to anyone that doesn't have a big family and that he could sell it someday.

Why Live Simply?

When asked if Elon is interested in material possessions, Maye said that he doesn't "in that sense," and for a good reason: Elon believes material possessions only weigh him down, per his reply to @kulpability on Twitter.

He even declared that he would sell almost all of his physical possessions and that he would not own any house in a tweet in May 2020.

The reason for this is simple: he wants to dedicate his life "to Mars and Earth," and to do so, he wants to better fund SpaceX's missions that would bring humans to Mars and other humanitarian projects, per Interesting Engineering and Business Standard.
