Do you ever wonder whether the houses on Mars would be similar to those of Earth?

Well, designers from the U.K. might have answers to your question.

Two British architecture and design firms: Pearce+ and Hugh Broughton Architects created a house for Mars living, dubbed the "Martian House." The house's design is based on life and weather on Mars.

Yes, you read that right. You can experience staying in a structure designed for the Red Planet!

Who Are the Designers of This Structure

As previously mentioned, Hugh Broughton Architects and Pearce+ developed this structure. These companies already designed a number of science research stations in Antarctica, according to a report by Fast Company.

Artists Ella Good and Nicki Kent came up with the idea for The Martian House. They intend to use Mars as a lens to highlight what we truly need and how we wish to live on Earth.

But before they actually designed the place, they held a number of workshops in Bristol where members of the public could envision the amenities they would want in their perfect space home.

The most common thing people requested is plants. Yes, they want to have plants in their houses should they have a house on Mars.

I personally find this surprising, but I guess this just shows that plants really liven up the house.

What Can You Expect With Martian House

According to Fast Company, the Martian House is a physical structure created to encourage people to live within their means in a limited environment, while being uninfluenced by consumerism.

However, the design is not without a basis.

Space scientists were consulted by the architects over how the environment on Mars should be taken into account in their design.

Design of the Martian House

As previously mentioned, plants are the most common thing people want to put on their houses. Therefore, it is natural that the second level of the Martian House has a particular spot for plants.

A pressurized, double-skin inflatable structure with gold foil interior encloses the "hydroponic living room". It has a window and a skylight, and the gold coating is designed to reflect the sun and stop heat buildup on the surface.

Martian regolith, a silt-like volcanic rock that is abundant on Mars, would be used to fill the interior walls.

Although it is cold on Mars, Broughton claims that the equipment needed for lighting and ventilation will generate adequate heat inside.

Separately, there is also a Duravit toilet and small sleeping pods that are located on the ground floor. You can find a kitchenette as well.

The Martian House Is Not Perfect

The Martian House wasn't created to be a NASA-proof house for Mars; rather, it was created to endure the extreme conditions of the red planet, which include an average temperature of -80 degrees and intense cosmic radiation.

"Its aim is to, as closely as possible, represent what a house on Mars would be like," Broughton said, "but actually in the process to provoke questions about our own lives on Earth."

Where Can You Find the Martian House

Next week, the house will be open to the public and will serve as a venue for a number of seminars and workshops on sustainable living, as per Fast Company.
