Windows 11 users can start installing the newly-released Windows 11 22H2 KB5018427 cumulative update.
The latest cumulative update also comes with security updates, bug fixes, and some 30 improvements.
Highlights And Improvements
Microsoft said the latest update highlighted security issues for the Windows operating system.
The security update includes the improvements which were part of KB5017389 released on Sept. 30.
This update, according to Microsoft, has contained miscellaneous security improvements to the functionality of the internal OS.
"No additional issues were documented for this release," the company said.
For users who had installed previous updates, only the latest updates in this package will be downloaded and subsequently installed on the device.
Mandatory Cumulative Update
KB5018427, a mandatory cumulative update, contains the October 2022 Patch Tuesday for vulnerabilities previously discovered.
A total of 84 vulnerabilities were discovered in previous months. Thirteen of these were considered "Critical" because they allow privilege elevation, and spoofing or remote code execution. The latter vulnerability was one of the most severe types.
Windows 11 Users Can Install
To install the latest updates, users can start by going to Start> Settings> Windows Update and clicking the Check for Updates.
The other way to install is to manually download the KB5018427 preview update from Microsoft Update Catalog.
What Is New in The Latest Update?
Once installed, the build number of Windows 11 will change to 22621.674.
Bleeping Computer listed at least 30 improvements and bug fixes. Below are some of the highlights of these fixes:
The update automatically fixes a bug that prevents the installation of Microsoft Store updates.
It fixes the issue of formatting the three Chinese characters. When these characters were formatted to BOLD, the size of their width are incorrect.
It solves a bug causing IE Mode tabs in a session to reload when Microsoft Edge is used.
It fixes an issue that opens a Microsoft Edge browser window in IE mode displaying a PDF file. And when a user browses to another IE mode site in the same window fails.
It adds dynamism to the Widget content to the taskbar by badging notifications. Users will notice that by opening the Widgets board while a badge is displayed, they can see a banner at the top of the board. It gives more information to the users as to what triggered the notification badge.
It fixes the issue affecting Dual SIM calling. Once the user selects NO SIM on the phone and makes a call on the device, the Dual SIM mode will not function.
It addresses the issue affecting some apps the Microsoft Store had not signed. After upgrading the OS, a user has to reinstall these apps.
Every User Should Know
While the latest cumulative update has fixed the vulnerabilities detected in the previous month, it has not fixed two vulnerabilities. These are the slow file copy performance over SMB, and provisioning packages may not work as expected.
The good news is a reason why the latest update is a big welcome for Windows 11 users. On top of issues addressed by Microsoft, another 22 bugs were also fixed.
