Elon Musk's Starlink is launching its satellite internet for moving vehicles in December, which allows SpaceX to give customers internet services while driving.
SpaceX has announced on Twitter that the company is launching in-motion use for its RV satellite internet service, which will not compromise connectivity on the road, The Verge says.
Starlink Is Moving From Mountable Satellite To In-Vehicle Service
Up until today, RV owners can only access Starlink's services from the outside through cellular connection, limiting customers to internet access when their vehicles are stationary.
However, with Starlink's new offering, customers will now be able to access the internet while they are driving, according to BGR.
The standard Starlink for RV services uses a mountable satellite dish that costs $599, but the in-vehicle internet service from Starlink requires a $2500 Flat High-Performance dish.
SpaceX says that the hardware allows communication with more satellites, which makes the internet while in motion possible for moving vehicles.
"Network resources are always deprioritized for Starlink for RVs users compared to other Starlink services, resulting in degraded service and slower speeds in congested areas," Starlink explains.
With this, the company promises to give their customers the best effort internet connection for $135 a month with the weather-resistant hardware built into their vehicles, The Verge reports.
Starlink's in-vehicle internet service promises immediate access to high-speed, low-latency internet on an as-needed basis at any destination with active coverage.
The company's new service also allows RV owners the option to pause and unpause the service at any time to customize it to their individual travel needs.
SpaceX has been allegedly building this feature for a while but has only been granted authorization to use the system for moving vehicles early in the summer.
Because of this, Digital Trends writes that Starlink for vehicles in motion is only available to customers from select markets in North America, with the first deliveries going out soon.
SpaceX's Internet Service For In Motion Vehicles Is Coming to Other Automobiles
Aside from integrating in-vehicle internet satellite services to RVs, SpaceX has also announced that its in-vehicle internet connection is also coming to airplanes and cruise ships.
According to Musk, it only makes sense that automobiles or any moving land or water vehicle has an internet satellite connection hence why the project is next.
Since launching the standard Starlink services in 2020 that catered to home users as a beta, the company has been expanding its market to different sectors, Digital Trends writes.
Musk says that because of this, the satellite disc service has the potential to generate $50 million in annual revenue if it holds a percentage of the global telecom market in the future.
Starlink operates with small satellites dispersed by SpaceX on Earth's low orbit, where there are currently around 2,000 of them deployed.
With more satellites being deployed from time to time, Starlink easily becomes a leading satellite internet service provider in the globe, with 400,000 customers in almost 40 countries.
