When we think of Mother Nature, we often think of awe-inspiring scenic views that we photograph and the source of the delicious food we eat. It cannot be denied that there is a lot of abuse that nature goes through at the hands of people even as we enjoy the best that she has to offer.
Sometimes, however, Mother Nature likes to remind us just how strong and terrifying she can be. From hurricanes and earthquakes to tornadoes and volcanic eruptions, nature can sow a lot of fear and worry by the sheer amount of destruction caused.
Netflix Documentaries Focusing on Natural Disasters
In recent years, a number of natural disasters have been caught on camera as they happened. Here are three documentaries available on Netflix that remind us just how scary nature can be:
'Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake'
The earthquake that occured in Nepal in April 2015 triggered not just an avalance on Mount Everest, but also another avalanche in Langtang valley. More than 8,000 died and more than 20,000 were injured.
The documentary series "Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake" shares firsthand accounts of what took place during the earthquake, as well as actual footage.
'After the Wave'
One of the largest recorded earthquakes in history is the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The earthquake, which affected countries such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, is also, as of writing, the largest earthquake in the 21st century.
The documentary "After the Wave" shares the stories of five survivors of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.
'Earthstorm'
A four-part documentary series, "Earthstorm" features real-life footage of extreme weather events made worse by climate change.
The first episode focuses on tornadoes, while the second episodes focus on volcanoes. Episodes three and four focus on earthquakes and hurricanes, respectively.
How to Keep Yourself Safe During Natural Disasters
You will never know when a simple thunderstorm or shaking of the ground can turn into something dangerous and even fatal. When a natural disaster happens, there are a lot of simple, practical things you can do to keep yourself safe or, in worse case scenarios, raise your chances of surviving.
First and foremost, pay attention to any warnings and advisories issued about possible natural disasters. Whether you are notified via your phone or you see the advisory online or on TV, do not simply shrug it off.
Another thing you should to is to make sure you mobile phone, emergency lights, and other devices that are useful in cases of emergencies have enough battery. This will prove to be essential especially when you need to contact loved ones or emergency services.
Also, make it a point to have an emergency kit or bag at home at all times. Aside from food, water, and IDs, make sure to put flashlights, batteries, and even a spare mobile phone if you can.
