Apple Watch Rescues Man After Falling With Its Fall Detection Feature Gets 911 Notified

There are just too many rescue stories about Apple Watch - from a casual fall that broke nothing but your ego to life-and-death situations.

Eighty-one-year-old Dennis Nikolai found Apple Watch's reliability barely three weeks after he bought one for himself.

KARE 11 recorded Nikolai's story and shared it on social media.

Home, But Not Alone

The nice weather on Saturday, Oct. 22, enticed the 81-year-old to make good of his time by changing the oil in his snow blower.

A member of his family would usually do the tasks for him, he said.

Blame it on the weather and the eagerness of a 25-year-old guy trapped inside the body of an old man.

Nikolai, who uses a cane so he can walk, said he simply wanted to help. There could have been some jolly family member who would be happy to do the task of cleaning a snow blower for him.

But he did it by himself anyway.

He Didn't Know What had Happened

Nikolai proceeded to work on the snow blower while sitting on a chair placed in the driveway.

After a while, he attempted to move back. He realized later that the move was a mistake.

He hesitated, then he tumbled in the driveway with his head hitting the bumper. He cannot even remember what had hit his shoulder.

Away From The Phone

Unfortunately, his phone sat at a distance from where he fell. He was getting anxious because he couldn't get up by himself.

But when his body was too weak to move and help himself, his Apple Watch did the task of notifying 911.

The smartwatch detected the fall and dialed 911 to get help for the old man.

911 Responder

A 911 responder, who was notified of the accident, called a police officer near his location.

Nikolai did not want an ambulance to fetch him. So he told the responder to get a cop to his place and lift his old butt off the ground, he said.

Within minutes, Hunter Panning, a Chaska police officer, arrived and lifted the old man up.

Thanks To The Cop, And Apple Watch

Nikolai definitely is grateful for the help he got from the cop. And he added one to thank for, the Apple Watch.

His reason why he bought the Apple Watch was to use it to monitor his heart rate.

Yet, he can still check his heart rate after the freak accident.

Apple Watch Series

One of the features of Apple Watches is its capability to detect a fall. If you are under 65, by default, this feature is turned off. But if you want to activate it, you can turn it on the iPhone's Watch app.

If you experience a sudden freak fall like what Nikolai had gone through, the smartwatch will intelligently notice it. It wouldn't waste more time to notify emergency responders if you did not turn it off after a minute from the fall.

Don't miss filling out the contact information for your watch. Your contact will get a notification and a map of your location.
