A teenage boy named Smit Metha credits the Apple Watch for saving his life when he met an accident that led to his 130-ft drop.
The 17-year-old from India shared that he used the device to call for help when he sustained injuries, and Apple's CEO Tim Cook responded to the incident.
Cook Wishes Metha A Speedy Recovery After The Hiking Slip and Fall
According to 9to5 Mac, the teenager details that he broke his ankle when hiking with two friends when he slid off into a valley due to the rainy weather conditions.
Metha, who was the seventh person to fall off the same trail due to the rainy weather, recounts that his Apple Watch came to the rescue as it allowed him to make phone calls.
He said that when realized that he did not have his iPhone 13 with him, he immediately checked his Apple Watch Series 7, and placed a call to his parents and friends.
The emergency response services arrived two hours after the boy fell, thanks to the fact that his Apple Watch survived the fall and remained connected to a cellular network.
"I think I'm alive because of the Cellular Apple Watch model I own that let me connect with my family and friends at the right time, without the need for a phone," he tells India Today.
According to Metha, he originally wanted an Apple Watch to monitor his sporting activities, but he is thankful that the device helped him survive the fall, Apple Insider reports.
Inspired by his life and death experience, Metha decided to personally reach out to Tim Cook, Apple's chief, to tell him what happened via email.
Shortly after, Cook responded, thanking the boy for sharing his story with him and the company, and wishing him well while he recovers from the accident that happened in July.
According to Apple Inside, the accident forced the boy to get surgeries to avoid possible unspecified complications and to remain in the hospital for quite some time.
Metha told reporters that he had to go through long periods of rehabilitation for his broken ankles, and he was bound to a wheelchair until he could walk properly again, 9to5 Mac writes.

The Apple Watch's Technology Is Saving People's Lives
Even if Metha's case of being saved by the Apple Watch seems to be extremely rare, it is actually not the first time that the device has saved someone from potential death.
Last month, a young girl's family also said that the Apple Watch saved their 12-year-old's life with its heart monitoring feature.
Mint details that the Apple Watch helped the family discover a rare type of cancer, which is rarely seen in children, in the little girl.
The concerned mother immediately took her daughter to the hospital when her device started beeping constantly and found out that the young girl had a tumor on her appendix, Business Insider says.
Like Metha, the life of the little girl continues to this day due to the helpful health features Apple integrated into their Apple Watch's technology.
While Metha's accident was horrible and unfortunate, it also serves as an example of the usefulness of the Apple Watch,.
