In a few weeks, your Facebook profile will show less information about you. Starting December 1, the social media platform will remove several categories of information from your profile.
According to TechCrunch, Facebook will get rid of four information fields from profiles including political views, religious views, addresses, and the "Interested in" field, which indicates a user's sexual orientation.
Facebook Wants to Streamline its Platform
The social media company will be notifying its users regarding the change. Emil Vasquez, a spokesperson for Facebook parent company Meta, said that the reason behind the change is to make it easier for users to use the social media service.
"We're sending notifications to people who have these fields filled out, letting them know these fields will be removed," Vasquez said, as cited by CNET.
In addition, the company's spokesperson added that the change does not affect users' ability to share this information about themselves elsewhere on the social media platform.
Social media consultant Matt Navarra spotted that upcoming change in the social media platform, as per Gizmodo. He tweeted a screenshot of the notice being sent to users who have these fields filled out.
According to the screenshot of the notice, other information of the users will remain on their profiles together with the rest of their contact and basic information.
The decision of the company to remove these specific categories from profiles is part of its efforts to streamline its platform. Currently, several features of the social media platform are somewhat outdated already.
It's worth noting that Facebook intends to get rid of the information fields that other major social networks do not offer.
For instance, platforms such as Instagram and TikTok offer simple bios. These social media services just let users share a little bit about themselves without going into specific details, such as political or religious views.
In the early days, people find it fun to fill out their profiles with additional information. However, as they realized the problem of privacy infringements, users no longer want to share details about themselves online.
Facebook's Move Aims to Make the Platform Cool Again
According to Gizmodo, the decision of Facebook to remove some of the information fields in profiles is part of its strategy to get rid of barely used features and cluttered, confusing interfaces.
The social media platform earned a poor reputation. Aside from causing societal problems, users said it's not cool anymore.
In fact, a lot of users are leaving the platform and moving to TikTok. Even the other Meta platform, Instagram, has also seen a decline in the number of users.
As a result, the company is in dire financial condition. Just last week, Meta laid off 11,000 employees, which is about 13 percent of its workforce.
The layoffs came amid a tough time for the company. It marked the most significant job cuts in the history of the tech giant.
At present, Facebook and Instagram remain to be Meta's only source of income. Despite being the world's most popular messaging service, WhatsApp does not contribute much to the company's revenue.
