Discord Unveils Paid Subscription Service For Server Owners

After a year of testing, Discord is now ready to let users offer a server subscription, where they can hide perks behind a paywall.

Eligible creators in the United States can now offer exclusive content and features to their Discord community with this new update.

The Platform's Subscription Program Will Let Owners Monetize Their Servers

In an announcement on their official site, Discord says that it is expanding the Server Subscription feature by allowing creators to earn money directly from their servers.

With this, creators and community leaders can offer unique roles, perks, and benefits in exchange for a subscription, where they can get bonus content and merch as well.

They can also use the promo webpage feature that just launched to promote other paid options on their servers to cater to their communities.

Community servers in the US that can enable the paid subscription are those that meet the following criteria:

  • The server owner must be 18 years old or older

  • The account must be in good standing

  • The email and phone number used on the account shouse be verified

  • The server owner should have two-factor authentication enabled

Should creators meet this criteria, they will be able to make one or multiple level subscriptions and determine their own prices for such.

According to Engadget, the company emphasized that server owners will get 90% of their subscription fee should their community decide to get the paid service.

Discord's monetization terms also note that uses will be paid out after 30 days or by the end of the calendar month, but they must accumulate at least $100 to get the first payout.

However, The Verge details that the subscription policy also emphasized on a long list of kinds of material not eligible for monetization on the platform.

This includes the standard illegal drugs, dangerous weapons, sexually explicit content hosted on Discord itself or linked from somewhere else, and anything that promotes gambling.

Discord Is On The Mission To Continuously Improve Its Platform

The long testing period of Discord to take caution around the launch of the Server Subscriptions shows that the company is concerned with making it sustainable and meaningful for communities.

While it is still uncertain whether the new feature represents a good value since it just released, Discord is for helping creators get started with money-making ventures within their servers.

The company even set up a creator portal, which everyone can access through this link, where a breakdown of the new scheme is posted.

According to Tech Crunch, aside from this, Discord is adding a suite of new interactive features that will enhance users' experiences within the servers.

This includes access to games of poker and chess among others, and a way for the community to watch YouTube videos together.

Additionally, Discord also announced that there will now be a directory of apps for things like RPG mini games, and alerts that will run with the servers.
