What's the Solution to the Google Calendar Glitch?

Google Calendar is one of the best calendar apps available for mobile phone users. The app has some pretty intelligent features. For instance, it can create event entries based on an email that comes into your inbox.

The said feature of the app can be extremely convenient for people who have a lot of appointments.

However, recently a number of users are experiencing issues with this feature of Google Calendar. It seems that the app is randomly creating events from emails that don't require calendar entries.

In the past few days, Google Calendar has been showing randomly created all-day events. According to 9to5Google, there is no clear pattern with this bug. But the news outlet added that it seems the emails with dates mentioned may be one of the triggers.

If you are experiencing the issue, it is currently unknown when the problem will be fixed. As of writing, Google has not issued a statement on the matter yet.

But if you cannot tolerate the unwanted events popping up, the simple solution, for now, is to disable Google Calendar's ability to create events based on your Gmail messages. While this is not the most ideal way to solve the issue, this is the only solution to the problem for now.

Simply do the following steps to disable Google Calendar's ability to create events.

  • Go to the Settings menu.
  • Then, proceed to Events from the Gmail tab
  • Finally, toggle off the Show events from the Gmail option.

Users Share Frustration on Twitter Over Google Calendar Glitch

Users shared their frustration on Twitter over the odd glitch in Google Calendar.

Christina Stephens (@CEStephens) narrates via tweet how her Google Calendar was filled with random events based on marketing content and newsletters she got in her Gmail account.

According to 9to5Google, a common event they're seeing is an all-day event called "U.S. Financial Privacy Notice."

The said even shows up as a reminder notification with the same name. It seems to be created from a newsletter that was sent to the news outlet's Gmail account.

In 2019, a similar problem was encountered by Google Calendar users. Spammers are using a trick that adds events to your Google Calendar without your direct permission.

For your convenience, Google tries to understand events in your Gmail messages, such as restaurant reservations and flight itineraries. Then, it imports them into Google Calendar.

When a malicious email is able to bypass Gmail's spam filter, this same mechanism can be used to create fake events in your Google Calendar.

Fortunately, just like what is mentioned previously, it is possible to turn this feature off to stop fake events from popping up in your Google Calendar.
