Sonic Team Head Takashi Iizuka Says 2022 is ‘the Biggest Year in Sonic History’

2022 has been quite a year for Sonic. There's the celebrated "Sonic" movie sequel this year plus the Netflix series "Sonic Prime." In addition, there are two Sonic video game releases, Sonic Origin and Sonic Frontiers.

With many things going on in the world of Sega's mascot, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka says that he thinks 2022 was "the biggest year in Sonic history," Games Radar reported.

But with that statement, he also revealed that there's still a lot more to come for Sonic fans to enjoy.

What Can Sonic Fans Expect Next Year

According to Iizuka, the Sonic team has been busy preparing a second wave of surprises to keep Sonic fans happy and keep that momentum.

He added that as we move into 2023, there will be more than just Sonic Frontier DLC to look forward to.

The team already announced additional content for Sonic Frontier, but there is a lot more outside of that, according to Iizuka.

The Sonic Frontiers DLC includes a photo mode and new challenges. Along with it are celebrations marking Sonic's birthday, including a new challenge zone.

While Sega is already using Sonic Frontiers as the blueprint for a new Sonic game, 2023 appears to be a bit early for another full, Frontiers-sized release.

The Sonic team will introduce new playable characters and a new story scenario later in 2023. Meanwhile, in 2024, the third "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie is expected to happen.

Moreover, Sega might take the route of Nintendo and plan a Sonic Lego set in the future.

USA Today reported that recently the Lego news site Promo Bricks found images of several unannounced Sonic Lego sets. This means that you can likely expect news about those in the near future.

Sonic Frontier's Director Says the Game Has Still a Long Way to Go

Recently, Morio Kishimoto, the director of Sonic Frontiers, confirmed that the game still has more to offer in the future.

According to Kishimoto, they were relieved that the release date has arrived. He added that the development team of Sonic Frontiers was "checking out the opinions of the critics and players." Likewise, he likened the release of the game to a global playtest.

Kishimoto also apologized for not contacting people for quite some time. He said that they've been busy with the release date.

When the game was released, Kishimoto and the team were relieved. Likewise, they were happy that the game have reached everyone safely.

When it comes to the new game released, Iizuka believes the open-world template set for Sonic Frontiers will be the "cornerstone of future Sonic games." The Sonic team head said that the game's brand-new approach "marks another defining moment for the franchise."

Just a few weeks ago, Iizuka said that their goal with Sonic Frontiers was to evolve the linear, stage-clearing 3D action that started with Sonic Adventure in 1998 into a new action-packed adventure game.

Similarly, he said that in the new game, they wanted players to have the freedom to explore the environment around them.
