AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 owners will finally be receiving the Windows Phone GDR2 and Nokia Lumia Amber update beginning Oct. 10.
The carrier has been taking some heat for not issuing the Windows Phone GDR2 and Nokia Lumia Amber update for the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. The update was released in August and has been pushed to all Lumia smartphones around the world that support the new software, but AT&T's Lumia 920 and 820 still haven't received it yet.
AT&T Lumia customers have been making their voices heard on the company's forums and the carrier has finally responded with a release date for the GDR2/Amber update.
"AT&T has completed testing the Nokia Lumia 820/920 Windows Phone software update on our network. We expect Microsoft to make the update available beginning 10/10. When the software update is available for you to download, Windows Phone will notify you so you can download it directly over a Wi-Fi connection. We appreciate your patience."
Microsoft has published the major new features of the GDR2 update:
Xbox Music - This new feature will make it easier for users to select, download, and pin music. Xbox Music also brings more accurate metadata (such as song and album information), as well as many other performance improvements.
FM radio - Allows users to listen to FM radio straight from the Music+Videos hub. (Not available for all phones.)
Data Sense - This feature aims to help users monitor their phone's data usage. Users will be able to set a limit based on their data plan, or just keep track of which apps use the most data. (Not all mobile operators offer Data Sense.)
Skype - Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) apps like Lync and Skype now boast enhanced stability and performance.
Internet Explorer - According to Microsoft, the web browsing experience is now "better than ever" with improved HTML 5 compatibility.
Camera - With the new GDR2 update, users will be able to set their favorite Lens so it opens automatically when they press the camera button. (Not available for all phones.)
Nokia has also added its own enhancements in the combined software update. After the installation, you will be able to wake your Lumia from sleep by double-tapping its display, with no need to hit the power button. Your Lumia's screen will always display the current time even while the smartphone is asleep and the new feature does not impact battery life. You will also find a new camera application that offers more advanced settings and features to take even better photos.
The update should start hitting AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 smartphones on Oct. 10 and roll out gradually.
