A new report claims that Google will unveil Android 4.4 KitKat and its next-generation Nexus smartphone, the Nexus 5, on Oct. 15.
Google hasn't officially announced that it will be holding an Android event this month, where the company is expected to will unveil an updated version of Android and a new Nexus smartphone.
The tech giant has already announced that the next version of Android will be Android 4.4 KitKat. Google partnered with the candy company Nestle for the launch of the updated OS. Nestle has agreed to co-brand its KitKat candy bar and Android 4.4 KitKat, which will see advertisements on candy wrappers and sweepstakes consumers can enter to win tablets, Google Play Store credits and more. Google has kept a tight lid on Android 4.4, but according to CNET, it will unveil KitKat and the Nexus 5 on Oct. 15.
The timing couldn't be better, as Google completely sold out of the Nexus 4 smartphone recently after giving it a discount - an obvious attempt to get rid of old inventory to make room on the Play Store shelves for the LG-made Nexus 5.
The Nexus 5 is expected to feature a 5-inch 1080 x 1920 Full HD IPS display with a pixel density of 442 pixels per inch (ppi). It will reportedly be powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, have between 2GB to 4GB of RAM and launch as the first smartphone to run Android 4.4 KitKat.
The handset will include an 8-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat. The smartphone's wireless capabilities are expected to include a 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and GPS, and it will also sport wireless charging out of the box. It is expected to be offered in 16GB or 32GB internal storage configurations and use a 2,300mAh battery.
Google has launched its previous Nexus smartphones in October with a coinciding launch of an updated version of Android. While Google hasn't confirmed any upcoming events, the company is expected to make an announcement in the next few days . The latest rumors claim that Google will begin shipping the Nexus 5 at the end of October and the unlocked smartphone will start at $299.
