It's easy to say that Twitter has not been the same since Elon Musk acquired it, and he has been known to keep a tight ship. However, his idea of "freedom of speech" has led him to reinstate several suspended accounts. Now, others can also open public appeals.
A Lenient Twitter
The open public appeals will let anyone who's had their accounts suspended request reinstatement for previously suspended Twitter accounts. The company announced it via Twitter, saying they will now review suspended accounts upon request.
The Tweet also contained an online form that the users will have to answer to get through the process. This is part of the platform's effort to take "less severe actions" when an account breaks a rule, as mentioned in Engadget.
Once a public appeal has been submitted, Twitter will evaluate it using its new criteria for reinstatement. The company did not reveal what criteria they would use, nor did they say how long the review would take.
Range of Enforcement: Tweets
Twitter now has several punishments for rule-breakers, but the penalty will also depend on how serious the violation is. They can enforce punishments for certain contents through Tweets or direct messages, or if someone like an authorized entity sent a valid request.
Twitter still doesn't tolerate misinformation. When a Tweet contains synthetic and manipulated media, the platform will label the Tweet stating that it may contain disputed or misleading information. There will also be added content to provide additional information or context.
The platform may also limit Tweet visibility. The Tweet may not be eligible for amplification in Top search results for those who don't follow the original author. Twitter may also downrank Tweets in replies. The consequence will depend on the nature of the interaction nd type of content.
There's also the requirement for the removal of a certain Tweet. When a post violates Twitter rules, the social media platform will require the user to delete the Tweet before they can Tweet agaibn. They will receive an email notification identifying the Tweets that should be deleted.
Twitter can also hide the Tweet in question when it violates the rules, and it will continue to do so until the user deletes it. It will also be replaced with a notice saying that the Tweet is no longer available due to it violating the rules.
Range of Enforcement: Accounts
If Twitetr found that the account has violated Twitter rules more than once, they might be subjected to heavier penalties. The platform can make the account temporarily unavailable until the violator edits media or information in their profile to comply with the rules.
It's also possible that their accounts will be placed in "read-only" mode. Meaning, they will not be able to Tweet, Retweet, or Like content. They will still eb able to send direct messages but only to those who follow them.
For the company o make sure that the user does not abuse their anonymity, Twitter will require the user to verify account ownership using an email address or a phone number. This prevents the violator from using multiple accounts for "abusive" purposes.
The most severe punishment, as mentioned in Twitter's Help Page, will be permanent account suspension. The account can no longer be reinstated, and the violator won't be able to create new accounts.
