Spotify is Adding a Feature that Disregards Playlists for Recommendations

The music streaming service lets you factor in which playlists are not suited for your listening needs. You can exclude certain playlists so your recommendations won't have songs or artists that don't fit your music taste.

Deciding on Recommendations

The feature is called "Exclude from your Taste Profile," and it will allow you to ignore the kind of music you don't want to be mixed in when Spotify provides recommendations for you. For avid listeners, this feature can help keep their listening habits for different events separate.

For instance, you might be listening to a lot of calm music in your sleep to serve as background noise, which will mean that Spotify will see that as hours of listening time and will probably make a huge impact on your Taste Profile.

Your Taste Profile is the app's interpretation of your taste based on what you listen to as well as how much you listen to it. Your taste summaries and personalized playlists will eventually affect Spotify recommendations like Top Songs, Daily Mixes, and Discover playlists.

As pointed out by The Verge, you might want to listen to something different in your waking hours, but Spotify will add your sleep music to your recommended list anyway. The same goes for the music you play when you're relaxing or when you're working out.

There's also the possibility that you don't just use Spotify for yourself. For example, you may play nursery rhymes or educational songs for kids. That's not something you want to be mixed in when you're trying to listen to, let's say, emotional songs.

How to Use It

It doesn't matter which device you're listening to Spotify with as the feature will roll out for web, desktop, iOS, and Android. Spotify is already rolling it out to users and if you want to try it out, the steps are fairly simple.

Open your Spotify app and search for the playlist that you want to exclude from your Taste Profile. Tap on the three dots located at the top of the playlist. You can find it alongside the Like icon and the Download icon just above the song list.

You can then select "Exclude from your Taste Profile" and it's done. Don't worry if you're not sure if you want it excluded. The exclusion is not permanent, and you can always go back and turn it off at any time, according to Spotify.

Of course, you can choose to opt for alternatives, especially if the update hasn't reached you yet and you want your listening experience to be tailor-made for you as soon as possible. The hard way would be to go through your Spotify recommendations yourself.

You'll see that it's a mix of different genres based on your listening experiences, wherein you can pick off the music you like and compile them in a playlist, or add them to your existing ones when they fit into the category. It's more work, but look on the bright side, you won't be doing it for long.
