Snap Announces Audio Recommendations and Song Syncing for Snapchat

Snap is adding more tools for users and content creators to exercise their creativity.

The social media company recently announced two new features for Snapchat's Lenses and Camera Roll that helps users and content creators to discover and share the music they love with friends and fans.

Snap didn't mention an exact date when the features will launch for users globally, but it seems they are already available in the US.

Snap announced in its blog post that it is soon releasing Sounds Recommendations for Lenses and Sounds Sync for Camera Roll to help users and content creators to make content that includes trending songs or sounds.

According to Snap's Head of Music Strategy, Manny Adler, the features aim to expand the Sounds experience Snapchat offers, making it easier and faster for Snapchatters to "discover and share the music the love with friends." He also mentioned that the app created a unique opportunity for artists to reach "a valuable and engaged audience, while then also leading fans to listen to the full song on streaming services."

Let's start with Sounds Recommendations for Lenses. This feature provides a new way for users to find relevant Sounds to complement a Lens; snapchatters can tap the sound icon to access a list of relevant Sounds to add to their snap when applying a Lens to a photo or video.

Meanwhile, Sounds Sync for Camera Roll allows Snapchatters to create montage videos that automatically sync to the rhythm of audio tracks from the Sounds library, allowing users to create fun montages easily.

Users can select between four to 20 photos and videos from their camera roll to create their montage. Once they have selected the content they want their montage to feature and the audio track they want to add, the app will splice them together that are automatically in rhythm to the beat of the audio track.

Snapchat's Sounds Recommendations are already available in the US and are rolling out globally on iOS and Android at an undisclosed date. However, Sounds Sync for Camera Roll is already available in the US and is expected to be available to all users worldwide on iOS and Android in March.

It is likely that Snap will also make Sounds Recommendations for Lenses available in March as well, though the thought is mere speculation at this point and is best taken with a grain of salt.

Snap's Struggle Against TikTok

Snap's new features for Snapchat are part of its efforts to try to compete with TikTok, per The Verge. You may remember that the company released its Dual Camera feature for iPhone users that allows users to take pictures from two different perspectives at the same time - a feature the company has been hinting at since April 2022.

Another feature Snap released for Snapchat is the ability to share YouTube videos with friends directly through the Snapchat Camera using the new YouTube sticker, removing the need for users to copy and paste links to share YouTube videos on the platform.

Though TikTok is dominant in the short-form video space, Snapchat is in the lead when it comes to AR filters that are now taking a central part of trending content across platforms, including TikTok.
