Disney is Forcing Google, Reddit to Find 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' Leaker

It's not uncommon to find movie or TV show leaks on online platforms. After all, it also happened with the season finale of "Game of Thrones." Now, Disney wants the help of Google and Reddit to find who leaked the dialogue in "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania."

Script Leaked

There is a subreddit entirely dedicated to spoiling plots from Marvel Studios movies. Although some are minor, a user that goes by MSSmods published a 63-page Google Docs file containing dialogue from "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania."

It was posted a month before the movie's release, and Disney is adamant when it comes to identifying the leaker, so much so that the mass media giant is forcing Google and Reddit to help them solve the issue.

According to reports, there's a possibility that the leaker is a freelance translator or a company that writes subtitles for movies. The document was translated from Portuguese subtitles, and the dialogues were not presented in the order of the movie's events.

Disney's MVL Film Finance unit, which according to Engadget is a subsidiary of the company created to support Marvel Studios productions, filed two Digital Millennium Copyright Act subpoena applications to force the two tech companies to comply.

If Reddit and Google do participate in finding the leaker as per request, they will have to provide the user/s' names, telephone numbers, and IP addresses. The same goes for anyone who is involved in the said leaked file.

However, this goes against the platforms' privacy policy, and Reddit's compliance may very well threaten the culture of anonymity that Reddit has built on. A spokesperson from the platform said that they were committed to protecting their users' privacy.

They are said to have a "rigorous" process when it comes to assessing legal requests and they may decline when they feel that it is appropriate. Reddit has a legal guideline that they released a month ago which applies to the issue at hand.

Reddit's Guidelines for Sharing Account Information

The platform shared an article titled "Guidelines for civil and non-government legal requests for account information" a month ago which has since been updated. It covers legal requests for releasing account information or civil disputes or litigation.

It says in the article that in accordance with their privacy policy, Reddit can only provide limited account information for legal requests, and only if it is required by applicable law. They also noted that the post creates no contractual obligation.

Upon request, Reddit will review the legal process and the disclosure request that comes with it to make sure that it is valid before complying. They will determine whether the requests are too vague or overboard, or if it demands confidential information.

Reddit also noted that they may decline should the request trigger concerns about the violation of free speech or other rights infringements. Reddit will notify the account user about legal requests regarding their information before disclosing it and provide a legal copy to file an objection.
