Mastodon is now easier to sign up for than before.
The popular Twitter alternative recently announced it made its onboarding process for interested people easier than before, allowing them to have an easier time signing up to the platform.
Mastodon is one of the Twitter alternatives that became more popular since Elon Musk's takeover of the microblogging platform in late 2022 - a fact that Musk didn't take lightly with his previous blocking of Mastodon links on Twitter.
Mastodon's Simpler Sign-Up Process Details
Mastodon mentioned in its announcement that it made its sign-up process simpler and easier to accomplish to kick off new users' experience with its decentralized servers.
With the new sign-up process, prospective users can now go through a default sign-up option that works with a server that the company operates. However, if a new user wishes to leave or join a different server, they can do so at any time.
As a result, interested users who wish to sign up to Mastodon can go through the new default sign-up process that lets them join Mastodon's server and the other servers under its platform without the need to go through another sign-up process ever again, per The Verge.
Mastodon believes that this move would give it a far better chance of showcasing the benefits a decentralized social network has to offer instead of having a new user try the app out and never hear from them again.
The company also believes that it's important for it to be good as a product on its own merits and "not just because of its ideology."
"If we only attract people who already care about decentralization, our ability to make decentralization mainstream becomes that much harder," the company said. "Making the onboarding process as easy as possible helps new users get past the sign-up process and more quickly engage with others."
Despite its previously confusing sign-up process, Mastodon revealed it had recently surpassed online activity of a billion posts per month, showcasing the effect of Musk's takeover of Twitter and the mass exodus of Twitter users that chose to make Mastodon their new home in social media, per Engadget.
Why Is Mastodon The Preferred Twitter Alternative?
As evidenced by the increase in Mastodon's online activity, more and more people are flocking to Mastodon from Twitter due to a variety of issues - some, if not most, originated from Musk's takeover of the company.
What made Mastodon appealing to (now-former) Twitter users is that it is a decentralized open-source social media platform that lets people access a specialized version of the site, called "instaces," which are usually themed by topic.
Mastodon relies on the content moderation of those who run their Instances to decide what kind of content they want to allow instead of using a centralized content moderation team to sift through potentially hazardous posts, per Make Use Of. As such, users would feel free to express their ideas and opinions with like-minded people without much free content moderators that dosn't know the context behind what they're talking about.
Additionally, Mastodon users enjoy a more robust privacy settings, allowing them to have more control over who sees their posts, helping them keep trolls at bay.
