OpenAI is expanding the reach of ChatGPT as it launches its own app for iPhones. So far, there is still no app for Android users, but that usually comes later on, and OpenAI also addressed this matter saying that ChatGPT will be coming to Android devices soon.
The ChatGPT App
Before the release of the app, users will have to use ChatGPT through the web, and for people who want to use it conveniently on their phone, it might not be able to reach the standard they would expect, so the OpenAI is introducing the ChatGPT app.
The new app is free to use, and it can also sync your history across devices, which means that the chats you've had with the AI chatbot through the web can be accessed through your phone as well, according to an OpenAI blog post.
Aside from the app being available on iOS devices only, it is also limited to the US as of now. But, the AI company intends to roll out the app in other countries in the coming weeks. OpenAI will gather user feedback in order to improve the chatbot further.
The ChatGPT app also comes with an additional feature, which is the ChatGPT Plus Whisper. The feature will allow users to converse with the chatbot using voice input through OpenAI's open-source speech-recognition system.
The company trained the neural net so people can communicate with ChatGPT in a "human level robustness and accuracy." It's only available in the English language, just as ChatGPT is, but OpenAI may soon develop it for other languages as well.
The size of the ChatGPT app is 42.2 MB, so it won't take up too much storage space on your device. Although, you have to make sure that your iPhone is running iOS 16.1 or later. Otherwise, the app won't work on your device.
Experiencing the App
When an app is free, users usually expect that there will be ads, but that's not the case with ChatGPT on iOS. In fact, if users choose to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus, which costs $19.99, they can access GPT-4's capabilities such as faster response times.
Through the app, you can ask the chatbot a variety of questions on the go, such as exploring new languages when you're in a foreign country, creating travel plans while you're on the road, or asking for cooking advice and recipes when you're in the kitchen.
Basically, it's very much like the AI chatbot you've used on the web, only this time you can access it through a single tap on your phone, which makes a more streamlined process to get to ChatGPT, along with the factor of portability.
One of OpenAI's main goals is to research AI more in order for it to benefit "all of humanity." Being able to access the chatbot through an app is certainly in the right direction. Although you can access it anywhere through your laptop, it's better to carry ChatGPT with you in your pockets.
