Twitter Bug Brings Back Deleted Tweets

Twitter users have been reporting that the tweets they would rather keep buried have resurfaced on the social media platform. The bug seems to be affecting retweets as well, along with 34,000 messages, according to a security expert.

Although many users across the world are affected by the bug, most of the resurfacing tweets are the ones that were deleted using third-party tools, as mentioned in Engadget. If that's the case, then it might be caused by an API issue on Twitter's end.

A former Twitter Site Reliability Engineer believes that the bug could've been caused by servers being moved to different data centers and the "topology" not properly adjusted before being reinserted into the network. There has been no news from Twitter about it so far.

The matter is no longer surprising, especially for people who have been keeping track of Twitter's progress under Musk's ownership. The social media platform has been through a lot of bumps on the road, some big enough to encourage users to jump ship.

It also says a lot about how the company handles user data, given that the content you thought you were rid of forever reappears, which may even cause unintended harm to those who have deleted tweets that could be considered distasteful now.

There are instances when celebrities have tweeted something that has sparked backlash, urging them to delete the post that started it, so you might want to watch out for the ones that escaped the trove that is Twitter's deleted tweets.

Still Unstable

Just earlier this May, Twitter also found itself letting loose a few tweets that were meant to be private, or at least limited. Twitter Circle posts, which are meant to only be viewed by a select number of people, were instead shown publicly, as mentioned in Business Insider.

The company informed the affected users of the bug and called it a security incident, also stating that they were committed to protecting the privacy of the people who use Twitter. Even before that, there has been a slew of issues that Twitter had to fix.

Users were also logged out of their Twitter account on the web, and when attempting to go back in, they were only met with an error on the login page. People pointed out that these issues emerged just as Tesla CEO Elon Musk took over.

This may also just be a side effect of Musk's significant reduction in Twitter's workforce. It also doesn't help that the tech billionaire has reportedly created an unpleasant working environment which caused many more employees to leave on their own.

It might be a minor issue now, but bigger problems might emerge later on. It's not a good situation for Twitter especially since users are already starting to shift to alternatives such as Mastodon and Bluesky.
