Sony Showcases ‘Strong’ PSVR2 Sales, Upcoming VR Titles in Business Meeting

Sony's PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) is slowly getting quite the attention.

The popular tech giant recently mentioned that its latest VR headset had sold almost 600,000 units within its first six weeks, selling better than its predecessor in the same period.

The PSVR2 previously experienced slow sales during its first few weeks due to consumers having other things to spend their hard-earned cash given the economy.

PSVR2 Six-Week Sale Figure Details

Sony mentioned in its latest Business Segment Meeting that its PSVR2 has risen out of its slow sales in the weeks that followed its Feb. 22 release date and has now sold almost 600,000 of its units worldwide.

According to the report Sony released, the PSVR2 is 8% more profitable than its predecessor, the PlayStation VR, during the same six-week period. PushSquare noted in its report that the report only covers sales until the beginning of April, meaning that PSVR2 sales have most likely exceeded 600,000 as of press time.

This increase in sales is surprising but not unexpected. You may recall that the VR headset experienced a slow start in the weeks that followed its Feb. 22 release date, with it selling about 270,000 PSVR2 headsets between its Feb. 22 release and Mar. 31.

Many experts blamed the slow sales on consumers' spending priorities being elsewhere and that the headset's $549 price tag further discouraged customers from buying it.

While that may still be the case, Sony did change something in its formula. An Engadget report mentioned that Sony is now offering the PSVR2 at retailers after exclusively selling them for two months at its official website.

This decision to make the headsets available for purchase at retailers made them more accessible than before, allowing more people who do have the cash to pay for one.

There is reason to believe that the headset will garner more attention and sales in the immediate and foreseeable future; Ryan revealed that the PSVR2 would have more games for gamers to play soon. These include a VR version of Resident Evil 4, Beat Saber, Behemoth, Synapse, and Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord.

Despite that, Ryan cautioned about judging the popularity of the PSVR2, saying that it is still too early to do so. Nevertheless, he is happy to see many positive reactions from users and the media about the new VR headset.

Sony's Plans For The PlayStation 5

Aside from the PSVR2, Ryan also revealed that the company intends to invest more money into developing new franchises for the video game console over the next few years, evenly splitting the investment it is giving between old and new IPs come 2025.

Another area Sony wants to focus on is its live-service offerings like Destiny 2 and MLB: The Show; the company expects that 60% of its PS5 investments would go to its live-service games while the remaining would go towards traditional games. It is also expecting revenue from add-on content like DLC steadily increase over the years, representing a growth opportunity for the company to focus on.
