Twitter Calls Meta's Threads a 'Copycat' App, Alleges It Poached Former Employees

Meta's Threads app is already facing some strong opposition so soon after launching. In fact, Twitter is threatening Threads app following Meta's big launch last July 6.

Twitter lawyer, Alex Spiro sent a cease and desist letter to Meta with allegations of poaching former Twitter employees to develop Threads.

"Twitter has serious concerns that Meta Platforms has engaged in systematic, willful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter's trade secrets and other intellectual property," the letter stated.

Twitter versus Threads

As a response to Twitter's accusations, Meta communications director Andy Stone wrote on Threads, "No one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee — that's just not a thing."

Threads have been teased as Twitter-rival with the app's bearing similarity to Twitter.

Developed by Instagram, users can post up to 500 characters long and include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length.

The team promises to make Thread "compatible with the open, interoperable social networks" that will shape the future of the internet.

Meta Threads Successful Launch

According to Meta, more than 30 million people signed up for Threads upon its release.

Signing up for Threads takes only a few taps since the app is connected with your Instagram account, making it easier for users to try.

However, users are warned that deleting Threads is only possible by deleting your Instagram profile.

Meta's vision with the app is to "take what Instagram does best and expand that to text, creating a positive and creative space to express your ideas."
