PlayStation 5 Has Sold More Than 40 Million Units Since Its Release

The console market is still pretty strong right now, and PlayStation doing alright for itself. Ever since its release in 2020, the console's sales are still strong and are beating its top competitor in numbers. From here on out, Sony is planning to sell even more as it matches its stocks with demands.

40 Million PS5 Units Sold

PlayStation continues to see success with its latest console, which was no surprise given the PS5's success in its first few months selling ten million consoles. During the 4th quarter of 2022, Sony sold 7.1 million units, both of which are thanks to the holiday season.

While Sony did not manage to beat that record, PlayStation still impressively sold eight million units this year. The entertainment giant expects more sales in the coming months, stating that they have a "well-stocked" inventory to keep up with the number of buyers.

Aside from the holiday sales, part of the increase in the last few years is influenced by the pandemic when people were stuck at home, as mentioned in Engadget. Because of that, the PS5 became the fastest-selling console yet.

It's likely that PlayStation could've sold more if it didn't face issues with shortages in supplies. Mostly, it was due to the low supply of semiconductors, which has also affected other tech companies. Luckily for those who plan to purchase one, that's no longer the case.

Compared to its predecessor, the PS4 has already sold 117 million units since its release back in 2013. PlayStation still has about ten years to beat its own record. Nintendo Switch, however, is a different and harder record to surpass.

Since its launch in 2017, the handheld console has sold almost 123 million units, which means Sony has about six years to sell as much. The company might not have trouble with that, especially with its upcoming remote-play handheld console.

PS5 Remote Play Handheld

PlayStation has more plans for the latest console, and this one will likely encourage more people to buy the console for themselves. Sony will soon release a handheld console that will allow users to play remotely through a smaller screen.

Players can stream their games on an 8-inch screen at up to 60 fps and a 1080p resolution. It will feature the buttons from the DualSense wireless controller on both sides. Sony calls the new device "Project Q," which will be released later this year, according to The Verge.

One of the downsides to it is that you'll need the actual PS5 console before you can play it. Players will have to connect the handheld to the actual console via Wi-Fi, and they will have access to all the games they have purchased.

Compared to other handhelds that can work on their own like the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck, PlayStation might not be able to compete. If the company makes it a native handheld with access to cloud gaming, it will probably fare better in the console market.
